Jos Smolders studied architecture at the Delft Technical University. For six years, along with Frans de Waard, was a co-editor of Vital Weekly. Jos (plus Roel Meelkop, Peter Duimelinks, Guido Doesborg, & Jac Van Bussel) is one of the founding members of the experimental group THU20. During the early 2000s, Jos founded online magazine and mp3 label EARlabs, and has since founded EARLabs Studios where he currently works as a sound designer and composer.

Originally released in 2005 on CDR, "Habitat" was Smolders' first solo release in a long time to not use sounds exclusive to electronic sources. The sound sources for the release are field recordings (made in 1995) from Sweden and Norway combined with sounds from the street where Smolders resided at the time in the Netherlands. The result is an ionized mixture of organic progressions and soundscapes.

At times, this release displays energetic jolts of adrenaline tempered with intermittent moments of late night contemplative quiescence. Abstract and surreal Escher-like moments appear like a half-remembered dream, and where Moebius strips of sound suddenly launch without warning.
